Take Away a Doggy-bag from Welbeck’s Summer Event

11 June 2008

Visitors to the Welbeck Farm Shop, near Worksop, Nottinghamshire, over the weekend 5–6 July are almost certain to leave with a doggy-bag, if they love their food, their best friend and other fine things in life.

The much acclaimed farm shop, which sources much of its top quality, local produce from the historic Welbeck Estate, is staging a special event to celebrate launching its new alcoholic range of locally brewed beers and ciders and excellent wines.

The farm shop is based in the courtyard on the site of the Estate’s nineteenth century gasworks and will be buzzing with activity and things to do, taste and appreciate.

The farm shop team are staging a special summer barbecue to showcase their wonderful range of meats, including beef and game from the Estate.  For a very reasonable charge, visitors will be able to sample produce on sale in the shop, cooked to special recipes prepared by resident chef, Andrew Norman.

A summer favourite of strawberries and cream will also be on offer, the weekend coinciding with the All England Club Tennis Championships, at Wimbledon, where this is a most traditional treat.

Some of the shop’s award-winning and highly praised local suppliers will also be on hand to offer visitors samples of their own wares, all of which can contribute to the perfect al fresco feast.

The Springhead Brewery, based in Sutton-on-Trent, will be bringing along some of its excellent real ales.  All, except Springhead Bitter, are named after an aspect of the English Civil War, with every ale providing the real taste of Nottinghamshire.

Likely ales on tap will be the signature Springhead Bitter, the big, blonde beer, Roaring Meg the most popular ale the brewery produces and some July special brews, such as Goodrich Castle and Surrender 1646.

There will also be delicious ice creams from Thaymar Real Luxury Dairy Ice Cream.  This Welbeck farm shop supplier has several award-winners in its range of 35 delicious hand-made ice creams and sorbets, including Elderflower and Gooseberry and Rhubarb and Ginger Crumble flavour.

Thaymar will have various flavours to sample and adults may even taste naughty but nice favourites such as Blackcurrant and Vodka or Gin and Tonic sorbet!

Those liking a spoonful of something special can revel in the fare provided by Mr Pitchfork’s Pickles, who are bringing samples of their highly praised, hand-made chutneys, pickles and jams.

Innovative choices such as Apple, Date and Walnut chutney are a perfect complement for the Stichelton and Stilton cheese sold in the Welbeck Farm shop.  Other choices such as Mandarin, Lime and Gin Marmalade simply offer a taste of sheer decadence.

With so many ‘best of breed’ food choices on hand, it will make perfect sense for visitors to also visit the Top Dog exhibition in the Harley Gallery, in the same location.

This quirky exhibition is perfect for dog lovers wishing to pamper their pooch, or those who appreciate nature.  The weekend will offer free entry to the exhibition featuring the work of 24 leading designers, who have used their individual talents to craft stunning pieces, all of which are intended for much-loved pets or garden wildlife.

The exhibition is full of stylish, practical and humorous gems, including willow pet pods by Lise Bech, silver name tags by Hannah Lamb, steel bird nesting houses by Chris Eckersley and hibernation blankets by Rebecca Shreeve.  Resident artist, Ruth Waller, has also created bird boxes from old coats!

With so much going on to celebrate the Welbeck Farm Shop gaining its alcohol licence, there’s every reason to go along between July 5-6 and raise a glass to this rising star amongst British farm shops.
